Dancing Fiddler — CD

For years, folks have known me as the Dancing Fiddler—but until now, my recordings haven't fully captured one of the most important parts of my music: my feet.

Dancing Fiddler is a 14-track collection of old-time tunes and songs where my buck dancing becomes part of the music itself. I experimented with different shoes, dance surfaces, microphones, rhythms, and steps until I found a sound that added its own percussive voice alongside the fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass.

The secret combination turned out to be pretty funny: gritty concrete floors and a pair of foam-soled sandals I would probably never wear to dance in public! Sliding across the concrete created a soft, wispy rhythm—somewhere between a mandolin chop and brushes on a snare drum.

This album features some mighty fine friends, including Ketch Secor, Dom Flemons, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Cristina Vane, Brenna MacMillan, Victor Furtado, Frank Evans, Tyler Andal, and Evan Winsor.

Track List

  1. Cindy (feat. Ketch Secor)

  2. Little Liza Jane

  3. Lazy John

  4. Black Eyed Susie (feat. Bronwyn Keith-Hynes)

  5. Little Sadie

  6. Drunkard's Hiccups (feat. Ketch Secor)

  7. Buffalo Gals

  8. Groundhog

  9. Little Rabbit (feat. Dom Flemons)

  10. Cluck Old Hen

  11. Down in the Willow Garden

  12. Hangman's Reel

  13. Crawdad Song (feat. Dom Flemons & Ketch Secor)

  14. Sail Away Ladies

The physical CD includes the complete Dancing Fiddler artwork, photos, liner notes, and album credits.

This project was made possible by 388 Kickstarter backers who believed in the idea and helped me bring it to life. I'm mighty grateful to every one of y'all.

Dedicated to my dance mentor, Thomas Maupin, who helped teach me that a buck dancer is a musician—and our feet are our instruments.

I hope when you listen, you don't just hear the fiddle.

I hope you hear the dancing, too. 🎻👣
